Wastewater Collection Systems: Process, System Types, Stormwater Handling, and Valve Solutions

A practical overview for municipal and industrial projects—covering gravity collection, pump stations, combined vs separate systems, wet-weather storage, and recommended valves/fittings.

1) Collection process: gravity sewers → pump stations → WWTP

In most wastewater networks, sewage is collected primarily by gravity from residential communities and industrial facilities.    The flow is conveyed through sewer pipes toward a pump station where elevation changes or long transmission distances require lifting.    From the pump station, wastewater is pumped through force mains to the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP).

Why this matters: collection lines experience variable flow, solids/debris, and transient events (pump start/stop).    Selecting the right isolation, backflow protection, air management, and maintainable connections helps reduce downtime and overflow risk.

2) Two main wastewater collection system types

2.1 Combined sewer collection system (CSS)

A combined sewer system transports domestic sewage, industrial wastewater, and stormwater runoff in the same pipeline.    During rainfall, the total flow can rise significantly, increasing the load on pump stations and WWTPs.

2.2 Separate system: sanitary sewer + stormwater sewer

Many newly built collection systems use a separate system design, where sanitary sewage is transported to the WWTP,    while stormwater is conveyed in a dedicated stormwater network. Separating flows improves controllability and reduces wet-weather shock loads.

3) Stormwater collection, storage, and controlled mixing

Stormwater is collected via storm drains and can be directed to pump stations or stormwater storage tanks.    In some operating strategies, stormwater may later be mixed with wastewater before treatment.

Because rainfall is difficult to predict, it may be necessary to store stormwater in rural retention basins    or in dedicated stormwater tanks/ponds at the wastewater treatment plant.    When the WWTP has available capacity, stored stormwater can be introduced in a controlled manner,    making it easier to manage mixed inflow rates and maintain stable plant operation.

4) Yaxing solutions for wastewater collection networks

Yaxing provides valves and pipeline connection products commonly used in wastewater collection projects—supporting isolation, protection,    solids handling, air management, and fast field installation/repair.

Gate Valves (Isolation)      Used for on/off isolation in main lines, pump station piping, and maintenance sectioning.

Check Valves (Backflow Prevention)      Protect pumps and prevent reverse flow in force mains and discharge lines.

Knife Gate Valves (Solids Service)      Commonly selected for fibrous solids, sludge, and slurry-like media in wastewater collection and pretreatment.

Air Valves (Air Management)      Release trapped air and help prevent vacuum conditions, improving stability in long pipelines and high points.

Service connections, joints, fittings, repair clamps, and accessories

Wastewater collection networks are built and maintained in the field. Reliable connection hardware reduces leakage risk,    speeds installation, and minimizes downtime during repairs.

5) RFQ checklist (copy/paste)

To quote accurately and avoid delays, share the following:

  • Medium: domestic wastewater / industrial effluent / solids content (fibrous, grit, sludge)

  • Pipeline size: DN/NPS; pressure rating PN/Class

  • Installation: buried/above ground; flange standard; space constraints for maintenance

  • Required equipment: gate valve, check valve, knife gate valve, air valve, service connections, joints, fittings, repair clamps, accessories

  • Material/coating requirements (corrosion environment, chemicals, disinfectants)

  • Quantity list + delivery requirements + required documents (datasheet, drawings, test report)
